Get SMART in the New Year

This is probably the smartest bit of advice you’ll get today.

When setting goals, be smart about it.

As in SMART.

That means you need to craft goals that are:

  • Specific

  • Measurable

  • Achievable

  • Relevant

  • Time-Bound

As you think about where you’re headed this year – and as you’re writing goals for those intentions – I want you to keep these five qualities in mind.

Let’s think about it like this. You might say you want to lose weight.

Now ask how you can be specific about it: How much weight, for instance?

How will you measure your progress?

Is this goal realistic – or are you setting yourself up for failure?

Is it relevant to your life. Why do you want to reach this?

And, finally, what’s the target date? If your goal is ongoing, consider making some mini-deadlines.

So, the refined goal might look like this: "I will practice daily habits to lead me to lose 15 pounds by June 15 when I go hiking with my family."

Now, that's not just better—it's SMART! It sets you up for success with clarity, focus, and a realistic plan.

Here's to a year of SMART goals and remarkable achievements!
